What is an SSL certificate?
An SSL certificate puts the “S” in HTTPS and not only ensures any information shared on that website is protected but provides peace of mind to anyone visiting. SSL encrypts the connection between a user’s browser and the server a website is hosted on. This guarantees that all information passed between the two is secure. SSL can also provide a secondary (but very important) function, which is authenticating the owner of the website. The level of authentication provided depends on the type of certificate (see DV, OV, and EV certificates below).
What are the benefits of SSL?
Securing a website creates on-the-spot peace of mind for visitors. Plus, it’s an industry-standard practice; most browsers will display a warning when a site does not have an SSL. Visitors to the website will immediately know that their data is protected when they see HTTPS. Plus, savvy users may examine the type of certificate, and the level of validation it offers, for assurance that the site is legitimate. Another great benefit is that SSL is that it’s a necessary part of search engine optimization (SEO); Google ranks SSL-secured websites higher in their results.
What is the difference between DV, OV, and EV certificates and how they are validated?
Here is a run down on ways DV, OV, and EV certificates are validated by the certificate authority:
Domain Validation (DV): These certificates can be validated in minutes. The domain/website owner will submit the Certificate Signing Request (CSR), which triggers an approval email. Once approved by the owner, the certificate files will be emailed. If the user does not have access to the authoritative domain email you can opt for DNS Validation. Organization Validation (OV): This certificate type takes a little longer to be issued because, you guessed it, your organization needs to be verified by the certificate authority (CA). The CA will check that the organization is registered and active, and that the address and phone number of the organization are valid (authentication call). The sources they may use for verification include government registries or through well known public directories like Yellow Pages, Google Maps, Better Business Bureau, Dun & Bradstreet or Bloomberg.
Extended Validation (EV): These certificates can take a couple of days to validate as the process is more in-depth. The CA will verify it more or less the same way as OV certificates, however, there will be more checks to verify details with the organization (such as the registration numbers, the period it has been active, etc).
What are UCC/SAN vs. wildcard certificates?
Enom offers UCCs (Unified Communication Certificate) which cover multiple domain names. They are also known as SAN (Subject Alternate Name) certificates. The UCC certificates we offer include protection for three domain names, and you have the option to add protection for additional domains as needed. For example, yourdomain.com, yourdomain.org, and differentdomain.net can be covered under a single UCC certificate. We also have a selection of wildcard certificates to choose from. These cover unlimited subdomains for one domain name. For example billing.yourdomain.com, admin.yourdomain.com, blog.yourdomain.com, etc., can all be covered by the *.yourdomain.com wildcard certificate.
How is an SSL certificate configured and installed?
An SSL can be purchased and managed directly in your Enom account or through API integration. After the SSL purchase is complete, it will need to be configured using a Certificate Signing Request (CSR). The CSR is generated by the domain’s web hosting provider, if you are not involved on the web hosting side, your customer will need to obtain this from their provider. Some certificate types require additional validation steps, as discussed above. Once the certificate is issued, it must be installed on the webserver with the hosting provider.
